On 29 January 2026, the SIESsail project organised an online round table titled “Inclusive Sailing”, bringing together 65 participants and experts from the fields of sport, education and inclusion. The event was designed to deepen the discussion on inclusive sport and to create a space for sharing experiences, professional knowledge and practical perspectives. The discussion was moderated by Maša Pelc from Društvo za kulturo inkluzije, while the project lead introduced the SIESsail project context, its objectives and the importance of inclusion within its activities.
The panel brought together a Paralympic athlete, inclusion experts and a sailing coach, combining personal experience with professional and practical knowledge. Speakers explored what inclusion means in everyday practice, why inclusive sport matters for both individuals and society, and what opportunities and challenges arise when applying inclusive approaches in sailing. Personal stories and real-life examples were an important part of the discussion. The speakers highlighted how participation in sport can support confidence, independence, social connection and a sense of belonging, while also contributing to a more open and inclusive society.

Particular attention was given to the important role of coaches and instructors. The discussion emphasised that inclusion often begins with relatively small but meaningful steps, such as adapting communication, teaching methods and activities to the needs of participants. Speakers also addressed the importance of challenging common misconceptions and encouraging coaches and organisations to approach inclusion with openness, flexibility and a willingness to learn.
The round table also explored the practical aspects of making sailing more accessible. Topics included safety, adaptations of activities and equipment, individual support, and the need to consider the abilities and needs of each participant. The discussion underlined that meaningful inclusion is not simply about enabling access, but about ensuring that people can actively participate, contribute and feel valued.
The event concluded with reflections from the speakers and participants, reinforcing a shared message: true inclusion requires more than access. It depends on active engagement, understanding and a supportive environment.
With 65 people attending, the round table demonstrated strong interest in inclusive sailing and created an important opportunity for dialogue among coaches, experts, organisations and other stakeholders. The event further strengthened inclusion as a core value of the SIESsail project and highlighted the importance of continuing to develop more accessible and welcoming opportunities in sailing and sport.
