The cleat hitch is one of the most basic and at the same time most important knots in boating. It is mainly used to secure a mooring line to a cleat located on a dock or on the deck of a vessel. Due to its simplicity, reliability, and practicality, it is indispensable in everyday use, especially during docking and undocking maneuvers.
The main advantage of the cleat hitch is that it can be tied very quickly, even in stressful situations or poor weather conditions. At the same time, it allows the line to be gradually eased or tightened, which is extremely important during docking, when the vessel’s position alongside the dock needs to be precisely controlled and adjusted. Another major advantage of this knot is that, despite being under load, it does not jam, making it easy to untie.
The cleat hitch is used whenever we want to secure a line safely while still keeping it controllable and adjustable. For this reason, it is very common on both sailboats and motorboats and is considered basic knowledge for every sailor.
How to tie a cleat hitch:
- First, wrap the line once or twice around the base of the cleat to distribute the load and prevent the line from slipping.
- Then cross the line in a figure-eight pattern around both horns of the cleat.
- Place the final turn over the previous one so that the knot sits neatly on the cleat.
- Leave the end of the line free so that the knot can be quickly released or adjusted if necessary.
